When Gil Salk closed his used and rare bookstore in 2003, he still had 150,000 books. Salk, 72, of Hebron, operated his store, Books & Birds, from 1980 to 2003. It had been in Manchester since 1985. The store was built on Salk's own love of reading. "My grandfather owned a couple of glass-front bookcases full of interesting books," Salk said. "I used to love going through those. It stayed with me."
