When Abdul-Ali Muhammad returned to Bridgeport, Connecticut, in 1975 after a year of military service, he felt that something had fundamentally changed. He started hearing voices and sounds that other people didn’t hear, and severe anxiety kept him from sleeping at night. He desperately wanted to find a job, because as long as he kept his mind occupied, he could contain his delusions and anxieties.
