John Mix Stanley’s art bridges the romance and realities of the American west. He ultimately traveled thousands of miles in four extended journeys over 11 years, meeting members of 43 tribes and seeing more of the West, it is often said, than any other artist before. He journeyed westward as far as Hawaii, and northward into Canada, chronicling a world that was on the brink of disappearance, offering images of individuals and cultures scarcely visible a generation later.
